When clearing out my Grandad’s papers after his death last year, we discovered a box of letters that were sent from his parents to him during his time posted away with the #RAF during the Second World War. Our aim with the now published diaries was to insert those letters into the timeline of his own diary.
The letters are both homely and comforting, but as Grandad also writes
‘I know they are not telling me everything’, when he refers to his own father's illness (he had cancer). Each letter is signed off in the same way ‘With our fondest love to you dear boy. God bless and protect you, your loving Mum and Dad xx’.
As you read each letter you feel that they must have been making their own silent prayer for their son as they wrote it.
