  • This history tells the story of a close-knit community of farmers, craftsmen and agricultural labourers who were occasionally caught up in national events. The lands of the parish were owned by a small number of wealthy influential families. The village lies close to the county town of Maidstone and so Hollingbourne folk were never cut off from change and new developments. The twentieth century brought major development from road and rail but every time the community pulled together to preserve the beautiful landscape in which they lived.

This history was first published in 2002 and has long been out of print and so the opportunity has been taken to revise the text and add new information and many extra illustrations.

Helen Allinson is an experienced local historian and author whose previous publications include histories of the parishes of Borden, Bredgar, and Tunstall. She has also written ‘Life in the Workhouse’ and ‘Farewell to Kent’; if you enjoyed this volume, or have a particular interest in Hollingbourne, then you will also like ‘The Journals of a Victorian Lady’ – Louisa Thomas of Hollingbourne.
